A Christoph Rau interview on very.tv was spotted in a link on a tweet. Got it loaded, very interesting, bookmarked it for later review as I was in the middle of a project. Came back later, the link now pointed to an entirely different interview, arghh.
I poked around on the site, found the interview again, watched it again, was even more impressed, but could find no way to link it. Maybe you email it or friend it to yourself to get the url, I don't know. Decided to take matters into my own hands and just download/tivo it to rewind at my leisure.
Activity Window
The classic way to capture a piece of Web content in Safari is the Activity Window, Cmd-Option-A. It works great for capturing most forms of online streaming content. But there are still some cases, where it simply doesn't work, for whatever reason. Of course, this would have to be one of those occasions.
Quicktime
Thought to self, why not just use quicktime, capture the whole screen as a movie during the interview? Did that, and it worked great, except there was no sound!
Soundflower
Did a little searching and discovered the works of one CK Sample III, who had worked around this issue with a very simple and elegant solution.
- download and install soundflower
- In Apple->System Preferences->Sound, switch sound output from Internal Speakers to Soundflower (2ch)
- Load the Web content and capture your screen as a Quicktime Movie
- Switch sound output back to Internal Speakers
- Playback the screen capture and find that audio is now included.
