Simplify event acquisition for site visitors
Different browsers and various settings on the server may cause the link to be interpreted in specific ways. For mediatemple hosting, add an entry to .htaccess for the domain
"Addtype text/calendar .ics" for the widest compatibility.
Best case, the browser prompts you to insert it into a calendar.
Worst case, text appears in a browser window that must be saved or go through copy and paste into a text editor, saved as whatever.ics. Then insert the contents of this file into the calendar app using whatever is most convenient, often just a double click on the .ics file displays a prompt about inserting the contents into a calendar.
Most importantly, speed, accuracy, and usefulness is enhanced.
The steps, in OS X.
1. iCal->Select an event->Control-click and select Mail event.
2. An email is prepared in the default mail program, with an attached ics file.
3. Save the file attachment to someplace you can find it.
4. The next step is to move this file somewhere web accessible so that it may be linked using standard href style formatting -- a href="http://domainname.com/subfolder/calendar-event.ics" Event Link /a
5. Then placing the link text into the html for the page.
