Float text over an image

Howto float text over an image, like in the hello world graphic.

1. Load the image in Preview, normally a double click of the image file will achieve this.

2. Preview offers four standard tools for marking up images, accessible from the toolbar. These tools are not always accessible from the main menu, for reasons unbeknownst to me. The four tools are rectangle, oval, line, and text.

3. Basic usage of these tools is simple, but taking advantage of the powerful built in font handling requires a little more work. The text tool defaults to adding "text" in a box to the image, with font set to defaults of Red-Helvetica Regular-36pt on my machine. Selecting the "text"..

..then holding down the control key while mouse clicking over the selected text displays a popup menu with Font in the list of options. Selecting the Font option gives access to quite a range of special effects that are too numerous to describe here. Drop shadows and some of the real specialized stuff may not carry over into the final image, but options like opacity and color are available to create some striking effects.

No need to dream up layouts and page views, just insert your "stuff".
