The built in MAMP stack makes installing and running the best of web 2.0 applications a snap. eZ Publish, Knowledge Tree, Osirix, mediawiki, other best of breed wares are easily installed and run in their native enviroment.
Save some trees, print to Portable Document Format (PDF) is built in to OS X, implemented at additional cost and complexity with any other system. OS X even allows PDF processing options, like merging, encryption, and useful filters that would cost big bucks if you had to go buy the capability somewhere else.
Xcode for a modern and useful Integrated Development Environment, the list goes on and on. A word of advice from a long time computer junkie. Before looking for more software to buy, take a look at what you already have. Likely in some form or another, exactly what you need is already in there.
